In a press release yesterday, The Weather Company announced the launch of its new Facebook Messenger bot, which utilizes IBM’s Watson to deliver personalized weather-related news stories, current conditions, and forecasts for its users. The Weather Channel bot can be used in 39 languages, and can be accessed through The Weather Channel Facebook page or through the Messenger app. Its features include current conditions, notifications that alert users to severe weather or news items of interest, breaking news, and hourly, daily, and five-day forecasts. Users are able to customize their preferences for daily forecasts in order to be alerted at different times of the day, and the bot will learn users’ preferences for news items as users interact with it.
Amazon released a new gadget recently, a WiFi speaker called the Echo. The Echo is a small cylindrical speaker, which employs up-to-date speech recognition systems to allow users to simply request a song from the speaker as if they were talking to a human DJ. The Echo costs $180 and connects users to the Internet, letting the user control the speaker with his or her voice alone. [Read more…]
Google published a research paper in late June that detailed one of its most recent sallies into artificial intelligence (AI). A “chatbot” has been programmed by researchers at the company to respond to conversations based on a set of examples from a training exercise.
The bot doesn’t just reply with canned answers when it hears a particular word, rather it can create new answers from new questions.
